Want to switch to Natural Beauty Products? Here’s how!

by White Green on January 30, 2018

Over the past few years, we’ve become increasingly aware of dangerous chemical ingredients found in personal care products. Manufacturers maintain that the levels of chemicals in their products are too small to cause damage to our health, but mainstream toxicologists are finally disproving these statements and acknowledging the health impacts of bioaccumulation of toxins in the human body.

We’re also worried by the environmental impacts of conventional products. One example is microbeads. These are tiny plastic particles, often found in toothpastes, face scrubs and body washes. They do not breakdown and are eaten by marine life, then ending up in our food chain, on our dinner plates…

So, we’ve tested out lots of DIY homemade recipes or natural brands for personal care products that are safe for the environment and for you. Here are our favourite finds:

1. Homemade Toothpaste

I found this recipe on a fantastic blog and I LOVE it! It takes a while to get used to this new flavour and texture, but my teeth are whiter and have less plaque build-up than before!

Ingredients:
• ½ cup of coconut oil
• 2-3 tablespoons of baking powder
• 15-20 drops of peppermint, spearmint or your favourite mint essential oil

Directions:
Melt the oil on the hob, add other ingredients, pour mixture into a reusable glass jar and let it cool. Once it sets at room temperature, you can dip your toothpaste in and use!

2. Homemade Cleanser

 Castor Oil Cleanser

I have been testing out different recipes for cleansing with oil. This will be an experiment for you and I recommend taking it slowly and getting the mixture right but it is a lovely way to remove make-up before scrubbing your face at night. I use 1/3 organic castor oil with 2/3 organic olive oil. But here is a link for the recipes based on your individual skin type.

3. Homemade Face Scrub

This is a really easy and cheap way to give your face a deep cleansing treatment or scrub a couple of times a week without resorting to harsh chemical products.

Baking soda is a great remedy for acne and regulates the pH level of skin. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and an excellent moisturiser.

You can experiment with ratios based on your skin, but here is what works for me!

Gentle scrub/cleanser: 2 parts coconut oil to 1 part baking soda.
Exfoliator: 1 part coconut oil to 1 part baking soda.

Directions:
Melt the coconut oil over the hob, then add baking soda. Pour into reusable glass jar (an old jam jar works great) and let cool to room temperature.

4. ILA- entire skincare range

It’s not always possible to make our own cosmetics and sometimes it is nice to spoil ourselves with a little luxury….this is why we have chosen ILA.

ILA is an organic range using only natural plant and mineral ingredients, all hand blended in the Cotswolds, England. Our entire family has switched over to ILA and we have seen a huge, huge difference in our skin. From the disappearance of acne and skin tags, to an overall glow in our skin. It is also Beyonce’s favourite skincare range…and who wouldn’t want to look like Queen Bey?!

We are currently using the face scrub, face mask, face cleansers, creams, body oils and perfumes…Ok…so we are completely obsessed and have treated ourselves to it all! But honestly, it is SO worth it!

5. Jane Iredale Make-up

When it comes to make-up, we have tried dozens brands but were always disappointed until we found Jane Iredale. This brand uses natural mineral ingredients that are kind to your skin, to the environment and are vegan-friendly (never tested on animals). The foundation is particularly amazing. It glides onto your skin, providing great coverage whilst also looking and feeling like you aren’t even wearing make-up!

You can read about the brand here and can buy it in select stockists around the world. In Ireland, you can buy it from our favourite beauty salon, Urban Escape. Urban Escape is one of a kind in Ireland focusing on nurturing both the mind and the body with natural healing. They even offer organic tan, vegan-friendly manicures and organic make-overs! Check them out here.

6. JASON Shampoos and Conditioners

None of my homemade recipes have worked out for hair care products…and I have had many hilarious experiments resulting in very dodgy hairstyles! Fortunately we have found JASON.

Out of all the hair brands I have ever tried, JASON is absolutely the best! Not only is it healthier for hair in the long run, it also makes it silkier and stronger every day. You can buy it in health stores nationwide at an affordable price of only €5-10.
